Totem Pole Cactus
A nearly spineless, knobby columnar oddball that looks carved from wax.
We’ll add pictures of our actual nursery specimens and mature examples.
Keep your cactus happy
Full sun to light shade after gradual acclimation. Young or recently shipped plants appreciate some relief from the most punishing afternoon sun in Laredo.
Let soil dry thoroughly between waterings. Overwatering can damage or split the soft-looking stems. Reduce watering markedly during cool months.
Pots or ground — give it room
Excellent as a statement plant in a large container while manageable. A well-drained, sheltered landscape bed allows long-term growth; a taller plant may lean or require support.
Use an exceptionally free-draining cactus mix. In the landscape, raised planting on a mound helps prevent waterlogging.
Slow-growing columns may eventually exceed 10 feet; specimens can branch and become heavy. Plan for space and safe access before planting near walkways.
Hardiness reports vary even among desert-garden references. Protect growing tips ahead of freezes, especially on young potted plants; avoid pairing cold with wet roots.
Good to know
The monstrous growth form makes rounded, irregular bumps instead of a typical spiny cactus silhouette. Rarely, more normal shoots appear.
